History and heritage

Badminton was first held in 1949 by the 10th Duke of Beaufort, in order to let British riders train for international events, and was advertised as “the most important horse event in Britain.” Inspired by the Summer Olympics of 1948 in London, the Duke recognised that such an event would assist in the training and selection of an Olympic team.

Dress code

There is no formal dress code at Badminton Horse Trials, you’re free to dress up or down as you please. That said, practicality is key as it’s an outdoor event in May where the weather can be unpredictable. Most visitors opt for mart country casual think tweed, deck shoes and sturdy boots such as Bermuda G2 or Cheltenham boots. Layering is strongly advised and a waterproof jacket is always a good idea. The trot-up tends to be the most dressed-up occasion of the week, but even then, the vibe is relaxed country chic rather than formal.
