During the summer, temperatures can rise to soaring heights that can leave you feeling uncomfortable and sticky, but it is often said that there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothes – and we are a firm believer in this.

Our summer guide therefore will aim to steer you away from those choices, and into a cool and comfortable outfit that will leave you feeling fresh.

What Not to Wear

Skinny Jeans – I’m not sure there could be anything worse than having heavy, non-breathable and tight jeans on when it starts to heat up. The feeling of being trapped when doing the simplest of activities can be draining and leave you bursting for a wardrobe change. Stay away.

Synthetic Material – Wearing a synthetic material such as Polyester has its benefits, but during the summers heat isn’t one. The low moisture absorption rate means that it’s hard to breathe which can leave you feeling sweaty and uncomfortable. Avoid.

Leather – Wearing leather will undoubtedly weigh you down whilst the dark colours transfer heat to you rather than deflect. Whilst lighter jackets do exist, it’s better to ditch the look during summer.

Socks and Sandals – All the benefits of wearing sandals are instantly taken away when wearing socks, as heat is trapped into the material, warming your feet. If you must wear socks though, keep them as subtle as possible.

What to Wear

Sunglasses – A pair of sunglasses will create a mysterious energy about your look whilst also ensuring that the bright sun is out of your eyes, although, it’s best to avoid wearing inside unless you’re rich and famous.

Bomber Jacket – For a comfortable and lightweight jacket – you just never know with the Great British weather – then a bomber or denim one will keep you looking stylish, protected and cool. Try experimenting with colours and stay clear of black.

T-Shirts – This one may be obvious, but there is an almost endless supply of them. Think about what you could wear with them and what colours will keep you cool, especially as pastel colours are in.

Deck Shoes – Perfect for summer and are the quintessential shoe style for casual. These, like flip-flops and sandals, shouldn’t be worn with socks but you can get away with wearing shoe liners that aren’t visible. We – at Chatham – are passionate about this…

The Look

Using simple and lightweight clothing will keep you fresh when going about your summer business, whether it’s on the weekend or at work it’s important to look good and feel cool. We recommend a short-sleeved shirt made from a breathable material, paired with loose-fitting shorts and deck shoes.
