Heritage and History

To highlight the fact that a range of our shoes are made in Britain, using only the best materials, we’ve created 4 styles, specifically designed to reflect the heritage and history that comes with buying British-made footwear. In the Made in Britain collection, you’ll find an elegant and practical selection of deck shoes, which are as functional as they are stylish. With beautifully-siped soles and premium leather, they represent time-honoured quality and continual innovation.

How We Manufacture Our Deck Shoes

Handcrafted Shoes from Premium Materials

Each pair of Made in Britain shoes begins in the same way: once the uppers and soles have been checked and double-checked to ensure their perfection, tongue protectors and laces are inserted, before they are placed onto a holding device, designed to give an anatomical representation of the human foot, known as a ‘last’. Once on the last, the upper of the deck shoe is heated to soften the leather, allowing our craftsmen to smooth it to the required finish.

The next step is to attach the sole, which is done using a special shoemaker’s cement, to create a strong and lasting bond. To ensure its security, the sole is later stitched to the upper, using the tried-and-trusted Blake stitch technique. For peerless comfort, we insert a memory-foam half-sock into the footwear; no details are overlooked.

Finishing your Deck Shoes

The final part of the process is to nourish and feed the leather, using specially-formulated creams to produce the finish that sets Chatham deck shoes apart from other brands. Creating Made in Britain deck shoes is a long and complicated process – but the results are worth it.
